Ecce Homo marks Pištěk’s return to the titular painting from 1983, which is considered one of his most significant works. In this piece, he reflects his turn towards biblical themes, specifically the depiction of the Suffering Christ, represented here by a racing driver with his head bowed in silent resignation. The gleaming engine in the background symbolically replaces Christ’s cross. The renowned original of this print has been featured in several of the artist’s retrospective exhibitions: Gallery of Art Karlovy Vary (1984); South Bohemian Gallery of the Capital City of Prague (September 1993–March 1994); Galerie Pecka (2007); Museum Kampa (2007–2008); and most notably in the Ecce Homo retrospective at the Veletržní Palace of the National Gallery in Prague (September 26, 2012 – January 20, 2013), where it became the central symbol of the exhibition. This work has been reproduced in all the catalogs of the aforementioned exhibitions. Mounted under glass by the artist.
