This work was published in the La Plume magazine (No. 202, 15 September, 1897, fig. p. 483) in the issue dedicated to the work of Alfons Mucha. It was also published in the literary revue Little Reader: Book of Czech Youth [Malý čtenář: Kniha české mládeže], No. 5, vol. 19, 1899/1900, fig. p. 69 and in the contemporary cultural magazine Zlatá Praha XVII, No. 49, 1900, fig. p. 581.
Originally, this is one of the artist's illustrations for X. Marmier's book of fairy tales Les Contes des Grand-Mères (Paris 1892, fig. pp. 224–225); in particular for the fairy tale Pierre le riche colporteur (Peter, the Rich Peddler).
A selection of illustrations was presented at the Paris Salon in the Palais des Champs Élysées, where Mucha exhibited for the first time in 1892 and received a certificate of merit for his drawings. The fairy tales were published in a Czech translation by B. Čech under the title “O králích a vílách”, Prague 1899, fig. p. 175.
