Jacob Duck (1600–1667) was an important Dutch painter who specialised in genre scenes, often depicting everyday life in the 17th century. His works are characterised by fine rendering of details, especially in fabrics, clothing and atmosphere. Duck was one of the most significant artists of his time, whose work influenced many followers and painters. The work In the Wine Cellar was probably executed by a painter of Duck's circle. The scene depicts a richly dressed man resting in a cellar with a glass of wine. The theme and style of this painting fit well with the context of Duck's work and his penchant for capturing intimate moments and everyday life.
